Goodbye Github, Hello Neocities

Turns out I didn't like this blogpost anymore

Moving to Neocities!

After some thought, I’ve decided to move my blog to neocities; Knowing that I’m done turning web development into my career, I might stop using github for my personal projects that won’t collorate on improving my overall career. I want to use web development as a means to share my work and let people know my work and stuff! And in the end, I still yearn for the web development mines lol.

This Site Is Super Ugly

Yup… mostly that’s the reason lol. I found a lot of inspirations such as Desktop Generation and Neocity itself. I’m kinda bored out of my fucking mind everytime I see my blog and between you and me, If even the author of the blog is bored of his own design then that’s a sign to change the fuck out of it.

Thumbnails Will Still Be A Thing

I love making thumbnails, they’re pretty fun to do. At first it wasn’t but when I just decided to think “who the fuck cares it’s my blog anyways” it became something that gives the entry more personality imo.

Research Results

I started by clicking random buttons in any neocities website and found out some similarities. First, they all had a guess book service being used, which is convinient since the free tier of neocities delegates you only 1gb of space to add files in your subdomain. Second, they’re also are a part of their own webrings and call themselves “Webmasters”, a webring in a nutshell—is a curation of websites that are linked together like as the name implies, a ring. Sites that are part of a webring showcase their neighbors website under a button with graphics and an embedded link upon clicking on said button. Lasty, the designs of each website I found some heavily relied on custom design that uses images more than css while others are vice versa. Raster designs were there because of how limiting css can be with how they manipulated elements on the html file it’s more of a work-a-round of the limits with what you can do with html. On an amusing note I’ve noticed, some of them rarely and even hated the thoughts of having mobile support for their website via media queries which is valid since neocities are mainly viewed on the lense of a computer monitor much less a phone.

Creating The Visuals

I was mostly making mood maps based on high techy looking graphics and with all these inspirations how does one even generate their own graphics? Meet Inkscape; Inkscape is one of the compitent open source vector graphic softwares out there with its plethora of tools in creating and adjusting paths and strokes as well as custom effects for your niche aethetics which is all that I needed plus, I was too broke for obtaining a copy of adobe illustrator or any other paid vector graphic solutions out there.

I caught myself lacking for the most part when it comes to utilizing the tools provided by Inkscape since i was pretty much a novice at it. Although out the process of making one visual, I was pretty much oblivious of the snapping feature for aligning nodes like in Figma—worsening my efficiency when it comes to aligning nodes together.

As for the mood map and overall prototyping, I was using Penpot—an alternative for Figma; I just don’t want Figma listening and using my artistic endeavors without my consent. Although there are parts in penpot that were lacking, It’s still compentent enough to be a rival for figma. The ecosytem for penpot is a bit baron since there’s really are no reasons to leave Figma other than actually caring about your privacy or the fact that they got bought out by adobe which leads to plugins bearing a lack luster results for very niche tools.

Site is Still Being Made Because I’m Too Ambitious.

Yeah I got and went over my head, I had many concepts bubbling up—choosing whether or not to add this design or is the color theme is good or not. There were days I like the color and there were days that I absolutely despised it. I will be posting this entry for now in my latest website just to let you guys know. Anyways it was fun making this blog.

The site is still being made but here’s the link
